We are currently living in a world of abundance. In the past decades, we enjoy an abundance of food, technology that makes our lives easier and more enjoyable.
However, this leads to a problem that not everyone is aware of i.e. too comfortable life.
History has shown us that – discomfort and turmoil create great men. Great warriors in the past thrived on chaos and hardship (Spartacus, Vikings, Spartans, etc. ).
On the other hand, comfort and hedonistic lifestyle ruin men. Why do so many Hollywood stars and musician‘s lives get worse as they become more famous and making more money? Why do so many addicts ruin their lives? Their lives become too comfortable.
When we seek out to improve ourselves, we should always try to get out of our comfort zone.
To build muscle – do more reps or heavy weight that you’re comfortable lifting
To gain more social courage – do social challenges that you’re not comfortable doing
To wake up early – get up and away from your comfortable blanket
In stoicism, this is called voluntary discomfort. You voluntarily do things that are uncomfortable so that you get used to the discomfort. By doing this, when unpleasant things should happen to you, you’re ready to face it head on.
As men, embracing discomfort is even more crucial. Our bodies are designed to do hard work, not seating for hours in front of computers. This is also one of reason why men’s masculinity has been declined fast in recent year.
Peace and comfortable life is detrimental to a warrior.
War and chaos breed great men.
However, we don’t have to experience war in order to experience greatness.
Each day, do something to challenge yourself, get out of your comfort zone,
bring out the great warrior that is within you.
